Farming area and production of pangasius strongly decreased

Farming of Pangasius for exporting in Thot Not district, Can Tho city.

(Can Tho)- According to the Vietnam Pangasius Association, Viet Nam's exported Pangasius is estimated at 1.23 million tons, down 6% compared to 2018.

Currently, Pangasius material for export is mainly raised in Mekong Delta provinces and cities such as Can Tho, An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Hau Giang, Tien Giang, Soc Trang and Tra Vinh. By the end of November 11-2019, the new farming area of Pangasius in these localities was 3,448 ha, down 5% over the same period; harvested area is 3,665 ha, down 5.8% over the same period, with an output of more than 1,166 million tons, down 5.93% over the same period.

The area and production of Pangasius farming decreased mainly due to the strong decrease of Pangasius price. In 2018, Pangasius material prices were quite high from 28,500-36,000 VND / kg, but in the beginning of 2019, the price was only 30,000-31,000 VND / kg and currently only about 20,000 VND / kg. Many pangasius farmers now suffer from a loss of VND 5,000-6,000 / kg of commercial pangasius, due to the selling price below production cost.

By the end of October 2016, pangasius export turnover reached over US $ 1.6 billion, and is expected to reach US $ 2 billion by the end of this year, down 10% from the previous year.
